Day 13 of 30 · Psalm 121:1-2

Where help comes from

"I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth."Psalm 121:1-2
Illustration for day 13, Where help comes from: a scene inspired by Psalm 121:1-2

This psalm was sung on the move: it is one of the "songs of ascents," sung by pilgrims walking up to Jerusalem on foot. People tired from the road, looking at the mountains on the horizon. Beautiful mountains, but dangerous too: there were robbers up there, and altars to pagan gods. The traveler's question was sincere: I lift up my eyes... and where does my help come from?

The Bible does not pretend the doubt does not exist. It lets the question be asked, in the middle of worship, sung out loud. Faith is not the absence of questions; it is knowing who to ask. And the answer comes with credentials: "My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." It does not come from the mountain, or the pagan altar, or luck. It comes from the Author of everything.

The rest of the psalm is one of the most tender things in the Bible: "he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep." Every human caregiver has a shift: the doctor goes off duty, the mother needs to sleep, the friend turns off the phone. God has no shift. While you sleep, He stays on watch. Generations of anxious mothers and fathers keeping vigil have fallen asleep held by that verse.

Practice for today: turn the gesture into prayer. Every time your eyes go up, to the sky, to the ceiling, to the office window, fire off a one-line arrow prayer: "my help comes from You." No ceremony, in the middle of the workday. At the end of the day, count how many arrows went up. Each one was a reminder of who is on duty.

To keep today

Faith is not having no questions.
It is knowing who to ask.
