The Kingdom first
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."Matthew 6:33-34
Jesus said this in the Sermon on the Mount, looking at a poor crowd, people with real reasons to worry about food and clothes. And his argument was to point to the sky and to the ground: the birds do not store up, and they eat; the lilies do not weave, and they are dressed better than kings. If God takes care of what lasts a day like that, how much more of you.
Notice that Jesus does not tell anyone to drop their responsibilities. He tells them to change the order of the line. "Seek FIRST." When God comes first, the rest does not disappear: it finds its proper place. The bill still has to be paid, but it stops running your sleep. Worry turns into planning; despair turns into trust with work attached.
And the next verse hands us a wisdom even people who do not believe recognize: "do not worry about tomorrow... each day has enough trouble of its own." Tomorrow does not exist yet, and that is exactly why its anxiety crushes: you are trying to carry today a weight the grace has not been given for yet. Grace is like the manna: it arrives in the morning, in the day's portion.
Concrete application: tomorrow, BEFORE you pick up your phone (the modern way of seeking the world first), seek the Kingdom first. The verse of the day, a short prayer, thirty seconds if that is all you have. Let God be the first search of the day. The whole line of the day gets organized behind whoever is at the front.
To keep today
God first in line, and the rest of the line falls into place.
