Day 11 of 30 · Philippians 4:6-7

The peace that transcends

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."Philippians 4:6-7
Illustration for day 11, The peace that transcends: a scene inspired by Philippians 4:6-7

Paul wrote "do not be anxious about anything" from inside a Roman prison, not knowing if he would get out alive. That changes everything: this is not advice from a man in a hammock by the sea. It is the secret of a man in chains who, even so, wrote the most joyful letter in the New Testament. When he talks about peace, he is talking from his own laboratory.

Look at the trade he proposes: you hand over the anxiety, through prayer, telling God everything, and you get back "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding." A peace that makes no sense: the bills are still there, the problem is still there, and the heart settles anyway. Anyone who has felt it knows you cannot explain it. You can only receive it.

There are two hidden details that make a difference. First: "with thanksgiving." Gratitude comes before the request, because it reminds the heart that God has taken care of things before and will do it again. Second: "will guard" is a military word. The peace of God stands guard, like a sentry at the door of your heart and mind, keeping the invading thoughts out. It is not a passing feeling. It is an escort.

A practical method for today, in three steps: (1) name the anxiety: what exactly is weighing on you? (2) give thanks for one concrete thing, before you ask; (3) hand over the request, specific, no decoration. Then let the sentry take the post. Repeat tomorrow. Peace, in practice, is a habit of handing things over, not the absence of problems.

To keep today

Hand over the anxiety, receive the peace.
The most unequal trade in the world, and it is in our favor.
