Day 10 of 30 · Psalm 46:1

Refuge and strength

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."Psalm 46:1
Illustration for day 10, Refuge and strength: a scene inspired by Psalm 46:1

A decade of life in three words: refuge, strength, help. Refuge is where we run when the world collapses. Strength is what doesn't collapse with it. And help is the one who does something about it. Psalm 46 was written in a tone of war. It goes on to say that we will not fear "though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea". This isn't calm-day poetry; it's the declaration of someone who has already seen the ground shake.

But the most important word in the verse is almost invisible: "present". An ever-present help. Not the rescue that arrives late, nor the friend who finds out afterward. When trouble finds you, he was already there: before the phone call, before the test results, before the news.

This psalm carries real weight: it was the one Martin Luther leaned on in the most dangerous years of his life, persecuted, threatened, surrounded by plague, and out of it came the hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God", still sung today in hundreds of languages. People from every century have crossed their own chaos holding on to these three words. The verse can bear weight. It can bear yours too.

And the same psalm ends with a practical instruction: "Be still, and know that I am God". Refuge isn't escape. It's an address. Today's challenge: one minute of real silence, in the middle of whatever chaos you're in. Without asking for anything. Just be still and remember who God is. One minute of strength in the middle of the workday changes the rest of it.

To keep today

God doesn't find out afterward: when trouble comes, he was already there.
