Psalm 139 · Thursday · Psalm 139:13-16

Made by the hands of God

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."Psalm 139:13-16
An old wooden loom with golden threads being woven, lit by a warm light coming from a window
On the coverThe wooden loom is verse 13: "you knit me together in my mother's womb". The golden threads being woven with patience are verse 15, "I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together": no one was watching, but God was at work. The warm light from the window is verse 14, "your works are wonderful". No one in the frame: the fabric is you.

"You knit me together in my mother's womb." It's a word from the loom: thread by thread, with patience, by hand. Before anyone saw you, before you had a name, God was already weaving you. You are not an accident or a detour. You were made with care, by someone who knew what he was doing.

Maybe you grew up hearing the opposite. That you were "too much," or "not enough." That you shouldn't have been born, or that you were a burden. Maybe it's the mirror that hurts you, or the body that got sick, or the feeling of never being enough. If someone planted in you the idea that you're worth little, today the Psalm comes to pull out that root: "I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

Notice that David doesn't say "I am wonderful." He says "your works are wonderful." The worth isn't in you having turned out well; it's in the One who made you. And he ends: "I know that full well." Sometimes we know it in our heads, but the soul has forgotten. This Psalm is for the soul to remember.

"All the days ordained for me were written in your book." Your days aren't loose. None of them took God by surprise: not the beautiful ones, not the ones you wish you could erase. That doesn't mean he caused every pain. It means no pain is bigger than the story he is writing with you. You are still in the hands of the One who wove you.

How to pray with it today

Today, look at yourself through the eyes of the Psalm. It can be in the mirror, it can be with your eyes closed. Say verse 14 out loud: "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." If it's hard to say, say it anyway, slowly. Then ask God: "Teach my soul to know this full well."

A short prayer

Lord, you wove me in my mother's womb. I am not a mistake, I am the work of your hands. Pull out of me the lies they told me about my worth. Teach my soul to know, full well, that I was made with care. Amen.

To keep today

You are not an accident. You were woven thread by thread by the One who knew what he was doing.
