The joy that becomes roots
"Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands. Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever."Psalm 112:1-3

Notice the word in verse 1: "delight." Not "duty," not "effort," not "discipline." Delight, and great delight. The Psalm begins by showing a person who isn't close to God because they have to be. They're there because they love it. Because they found out that's where the soul rests. And it's from that simple, everyday delight that everything else in the Psalm grows, including the steadfast heart we'll see on Thursday.
Maybe you're in a season where the Bible has become one more task on the list, and prayer one more thing you owe. If that's you, no guilt: it happens to everyone who is tired. The invitation of verse 1 isn't to try harder. It's to start enjoying him again. To read a verse the way you take a sip of cold water on a hot day, not the way you check off a goal.
And verses 2 and 3? They talk about blessed children and say, "Wealth and riches are in their houses." Be careful not to read that as a promise of guaranteed money, because the Bible is full of faithful people who went without. The Psalm itself explains which wealth lasts: "their righteousness endures forever." What remains of a life lived close to God isn't the bank account. It's the good that life planted in the children, the grandchildren, in everyone who passed nearby.
You don't need to have everything figured out to begin. You only need a little bit of delight in God today. One sentence from the Bible that touches you. One minute talking with him in the car. That's how roots begin: small, daily, almost invisible. And they're what will hold you when the wind comes.
How to pray with it today
Today, don't pray out of obligation. Pick a small, pleasant moment in your day (your coffee, your shower, your drive) and talk to God right there, the way you talk with someone you love. Say: "Lord, I want to delight in you again." And repeat it a few times throughout the day.
A short prayer
Lord, sometimes being with you has turned into a chore. Give me back the delight. I want to love being with you again, like someone coming home. Plant in me roots that last, for me and for the ones who come after me. Amen.
To keep today
A steadfast heart doesn't begin with effort. It begins with the delight of being close to God, a little each day.
