Light that dawns in the dark
"Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous. Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice. Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever."Psalm 112:4-6

Read it slowly: "Even in darkness light dawns for the upright." Notice that the Psalm doesn't say the upright never go through the dark. They do. The darkness is right there in the verse, with no disguise. What the Psalm promises is that, in the middle of it, light dawns. Not after it's all over. In the middle. Like the first streak of light in the sky at 5 a.m., when the night still seems whole.
Maybe you're in a night right now. An illness in the family, a hard marriage, a child far away, a job that won't come. And maybe what hurts most isn't even the darkness, but the feeling that it will never end. Verse 4 is speaking to you: light dawns. It may be small at first. A word from someone, a peace you can't explain, the strength to get up tomorrow. Pay attention to it. That's God turning on the morning.
And look at how the Psalm describes the people who live in that light: "gracious and compassionate," "generous," lending freely. Whoever has received light in the dark ends up with a soft heart for other people's darkness. That's no coincidence. The mercy you receive becomes the mercy you give, and that's exactly how the light spreads.
"Surely the righteous will never be shaken." It doesn't mean nothing will rock you. It means that even when you sway, you won't fall. Because what holds you up isn't the calm. It's him.
How to pray with it today
Today, think about your night, the thing that weighs on you most right now, and tell God honestly: "Lord, it's dark here." Then ask: "Make light dawn here." And throughout the day, watch for any small light that shows up. Thank him for it, even if it's small.
A short prayer
Lord, you know my night. I don't have to pretend it's bright. But I believe that with you light dawns even here. Open my eyes to see the first ray, and help me be light for those who are in the dark too. Amen.
To keep today
The Psalm doesn't deny the dark. It promises that, in the middle of it, light dawns.
