← Praying the Psalms

Day 3 of 4 · Psalm 19:14

Getting the heart ready

"May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer."Psalm 19:14

Tomorrow we start praying straight from the Psalms, using the words David and others wrote thousands of years ago as our own prayer for today. This verse is a beautiful request to make before we begin: that both the mouth and the heart are lined up, not just repeating text.

Praying with Scripture works best when you don't read fast, just to get it done. It's more like tasting food slowly: stopping at the word that bothered you, repeating the line that felt like a hug. The Psalm your mouth is saying and the heart that is meditating need to be saying the same thing.

To keep today

It's not just reading the Psalm.
It's letting your heart agree with what your mouth is saying.
