Day 8 of 30 · Isaiah 41:10

Do not fear

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."Isaiah 41:10
Illustration for day 8, Do not fear: a scene inspired by Isaiah 41:10

"Do not fear", in all its variations, is one of the most repeated commands in the whole Bible. God repeats it so often because he knows the material he's working with: people who wake up with a tight chest without even knowing why. This version in Isaiah was written for a people headed into exile, people with real, concrete, enormous reasons to be afraid.

And notice the verse doesn't say "do not fear, because nothing bad is going to happen". The reason given is different, and better: "do not fear, for I am with you". The Bible's promise is almost never the absence of the storm. It's company inside it. Fear loves the future and loneliness; God's answer is the present and his presence.

The ending is tender in a concrete way: "I will uphold you with my righteous right hand". In that culture, the right hand was the hand of strength and honor. And any parent knows the scene: a scared child doesn't ask for an explanation. The child asks for a hand. Holding a hand doesn't change the dark; it completely changes the walk through it. Whole generations have crossed wars, hospitals and grief holding on to this verse.

Today's application, very practical: name your current fear. Write it in one sentence, no softening. Now read the verse with that fear in front of you: "Do not fear [the name of your fear], for I am with you." The fear may still be there. But now it knows you are not alone.

To keep today

God doesn't promise there won't be a storm.
He promises his hand inside it.
