Day 28 of 30 · Isaiah 55:11

It won't return empty

"So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."Isaiah 55:11
Illustration for day 28, It won't return empty: a scene inspired by Isaiah 55:11

We're almost at the end of the month, and maybe a question is showing up: "did all this I read actually stay in me? I don't remember the verses by heart..." God answers before the question, with an image of rain: just as water comes down from the sky and doesn't go back without watering the earth, the word that goes out from His mouth NEVER returns empty. Not one of the 27 days you've read was wasted.

Notice the physics of the image: nobody sees rain working. It falls, disappears into the soil, and apparently that's it. But weeks later the field is green, and nobody can point to which drop did what. The Word works the same way: it comes down, disappears into the soil of your life, and works in the hidden place. You don't remember lunch from three weeks ago, but it fed you. You don't remember every verse of the month, but they shaped you.

And the chapter's context makes it all even more beautiful: it's the famous invitation, "come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters... without money and without cost." God's rain isn't sold; it's poured out. The same chapter that promises the Word won't return empty opens by inviting anyone, for free, to stand under it.

Application: this promise holds for what you plant in others too. The word spoken to the child who doesn't seem to listen, the prayer for the person who doesn't seem to change, the verse you shared that seemed to fall into nothing. It didn't fall. It's germinating under a soil you can't see. Today, plant one more seed in someone, without demanding an instant sprout. And trust the rain.

To keep today

A seed of the Word is never lost.
If it hasn't sprouted yet, it's because it's germinating.
