Day 26 of 30 · Psalm 139:13-14

Fearfully and wonderfully made

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."Psalm 139:13-14
Illustration for day 26, Fearfully and wonderfully made: a scene inspired by Psalm 139:13-14

"You knit me together in my mother's womb." The verb belongs to a craftsman. Not a factory, not an assembly line, not a mass-produced copy. Knitting is slow work, stitch by stitch, by someone who picks every color on purpose. David is claiming something huge: I am not an accident, or a statistic, or a standard model. I'm a one-of-a-kind piece, handmade, by Someone who knew what He was doing.

The whole of Psalm 139 is David amazed at a God who knows him from the inside: knows when he sits down and when he gets up, knows the word before it reaches his tongue. And instead of feeling watched, David feels valued. To be completely known and still completely loved: that's the Bible's definition of intimacy.

We live in the era that profits most from broken self-image in all of history: every day, a screen showing who you "should" be. Thinner, younger, more productive, more like someone else. Psalm 139 is the 3,000-year-old antidote: you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Including the parts you look at in the mirror and want to trade. The Craftsman chose them stitch by stitch.

And notice the last line, because it's a decision, not a feeling: "I know that FULL WELL." David chose to be certain. Today's application, in front of the mirror: instead of the usual inventory of flaws, one sentence said quietly. "Wonderfully made, knit by hand, I know it full well." Sounds like little. Said every day, it rewrites the way you look at yourself.

To keep today

You didn't come off an assembly line.
You were knit by hand, stitch by stitch, on purpose.
