By name
"Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze."Isaiah 43:1-2
This whole blog exists because of a Name, and today the verse reveals something intimate: God knows yours too. "I have summoned you by name; you are mine." This was said to a people in exile, in the deepest anonymity: deported, numbered, forgotten. And what does God call them by? Their own name. To Him you're not a face in the crowd. You are a name called out, chosen, belonging to Someone.
Notice the verse's brutal honesty: it doesn't say "IF you pass through the waters." It says "WHEN." God doesn't promise a life with no deep rivers and no fire. He promises something better: that no crossing will be made alone, and none of them will consume you. It's a promise of company with a guarantee of arrival.
And the people who heard this had the proof in their memory. The waters: the Red Sea opened, and the Jordan stopped. The fire: three young men thrown into a furnace in Babylon came out without even the smell of smoke, and the king saw a fourth man walking with them in the middle of the flames. "You will not be burned" wasn't a figure of speech for those people. It was historical record.
Keep the order of the sentences, because it's the secret: first "you are mine," then "when you pass through." Belonging comes BEFORE the storm. Today's application: read the verse with your name in it. "Do not fear, [your name], I have redeemed you; you are mine." And name your current crossing. It's still wet and still hot. But the One holding you has a track record of open seas and furnaces put out.
To keep today
God doesn't know you as "that person." He knows you by name.
And He said: mine.
