Apart from me you can do nothing

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."John 15:5
A vine branch loaded with clusters of ripe purple grapes and green leaves, with the sun shining through the grapes
On the coverThe branch loaded with ripe grapes is the first half of verse 5: "you will bear much fruit". It's not a special branch. It's a connected branch. The light shining through the grapes is the life that comes from the trunk, which barely shows, but holds everything up. No one in the photo.

"Apart from me you can do nothing." At first glance, the sentence sounds harsh. Nothing? We do lots of things without thinking about God: we work, cook, pay bills. But Jesus isn't talking about tasks. He's talking about fruit: what lasts, what nourishes, what changes someone's life.

And maybe this sentence touches a sensitive place: the fear of not being enough. You look at your own life and it seems like so little. Little faith, little strength, little to show for it. If that's where you are, this sentence isn't an accusation. It's rest. No one expects you to be enough on your own. Not even Jesus expects that.

Notice the first half of the same verse: "If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit". Much fruit. Not a little, not the minimum. The same sentence that says "without me, nothing" says "with me, much". The problem was never the size of the branch. It was always the connection.

This week we climbed four steps: the true vine, remaining in Him, the branch that can't bear fruit by itself, and, today, "apart from me you can do nothing". Deep down it's a single sentence: stay close. Tomorrow there's a guide on how to pray when you feel dry inside. And on Sunday, the week's review, with John 15:1-5 verse by verse.

How to pray with it today

Before you start the hardest thing in your day, stop for ten seconds and say: "Jesus, without You I can't. With You, I'll go." Then do it. At night, notice one good thing that happened and give thanks. That was fruit.

A short prayer

Jesus, without You I can do nothing. And that's okay. I don't need to be enough on my own. Remain in me, and I will remain in You, and may my life bear the fruit You want. Amen.

To keep today

Without Him, nothing. With Him, much fruit. The problem was never the size of the branch. It was the connection.
