Day 4 of 30 · Matthew 4:4

The other hunger

"It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"Matthew 4:4
Illustration for day 4, The other hunger: a scene inspired by Matthew 4:4

Jesus said this line truly hungry. Forty days without eating, in the desert, and the tempter shows up with the most reasonable offer in the world: "tell these stones to become bread". Jesus could have. He didn't. Instead, he quoted an ancient line and nailed it down: there is a hunger bread can't fix.

The line he quoted comes from Deuteronomy, from the story of the manna: in the desert, God fed his people with bread from heaven that fell every day, but only that day's portion. No one could stock up. The lesson was this: learn to depend on God one morning at a time. Jesus, in his own desert, held himself up on exactly that.

You know the other hunger. It's the emptiness that stays after dinner, after the new purchase, after the endless scrolling on your phone. We try to feed it with everything there is, and it comes back, because it isn't hunger for things. It's hunger for meaning, for purpose, for God. The body lets you know when it needs to eat; the soul lets you know too, only we learned to call its signal "anxiety" and push it away with distraction.

Today's invitation is a change of menu: give your soul the same routine you give your body. One concrete challenge for tomorrow morning: before opening any social media, open the verse of the day. Breakfast for the soul first. At the end of the week, notice which of the two routines left you more whole.

To keep today

Feed your soul with the same discipline you use to feed your body.
